Snow Day

Until this morning I was truly convinced that our school district never closes school due to inclement weather. School was not canceled last year when I watched two cars spin out in front of me on a particularly icy morning. School was not canceled last year when it was -12. I'm not joking about the temperature. By the time I picked my daughters up it had "warmed up" to a whopping -2.
Last night all the TV forecasters cautioned that a snowstorm was coming. When I woke up this morning there was some snow on the ground, but nothing we haven't seen before.

I almost didn't check the TV before rousing my daughters. Then I realized if I didn't check for a cancellation, school would be closed and we would have missed an opportunity for a lazy morning. Sure enough, no school. I managed to keep everyone in bed for another hour.
As a child, I hated snow days. I loved school. As a teenager I loved snow days and the chance to stay in bed as long as I wanted. My daughters were so disappointed to find out they're not going to school today... especially since today I was supposed to volunteer in their classroom. We spent all day yesterday talking about how much fun it would be to have mommy at school. Another day I guess.
To make up for their disappointment we'll be baking cookies this afternoon. The way it looks outside, I feel as though we should be making Christmas cookies instead of Halloween-themed cookies!

No snow here, though it's a chilly (for us) 60-ish degrees outside. My son's class is doing a field trip today so I hope the weather holds up for them.

A field trip on a chilly day? No fun... although today I would take a "chilly" 60! (Actually, it's not that cold out. I just traipsed outside to fetch the trash cans. The snow just won't quit, though!)

Our school district is like that too - they never seem to close, even on the coldest days - but then every now and then there's a random small snow and they close. One good thing for you though - it seems like people drive worse on the first snow day of the year, like it takes a day to remember how to drive in snow. So it's probably a good thing you don't have to head out.

We had snow a week ago, but only about half an inch. Crazy weather this month!

Good point, Brooke. Hubby said the commute to work was full of bad drivers, so hopefully they all got it out of their system.
MaryAnne: How's this for crazy weather... just a week ago it was 70. Now we're shoveling. Ack.

I don't know why Alaska gets such a bad rap . . . you've got snow already, and we don't!

Every few years we'll get a couple of days of really bad weather with super icy roads, and school will be closed. Some parents have an absolute FIT, because they work and don't have any optional care for their children. But it's just too dangerous to send out buses, etc.

Even though we had two snow days last week, it's back in the 70's this week. Go figure...
