It's About Time

We have lived in this house for nearly four years. We haven't done much work on it. In all honesty, it doesn't need that much work (thank goodness), but the bachelor who lived here before us had horrible taste... at least when it came to choosing paint.
I call our TV room "the cat puke colored room." If you've ever seen a hairball, then you can visualize what color the walls are. For whatever reason, he thought that color transitioned nicely to burnt orange, which is the color of the dining/kitchen area. (The kitchen and TV room are essentially one big open space). The downstairs bathroom and the girls' bathroom upstairs are also a lovely shade of cat puke. The rest of the downstairs is white, mainly because there's no logical break in the walls to paint the rest of the downstairs, unless you want the entire upstairs to be that color, too.
Speaking of the upstairs, we did have to paint the girls' original bedroom before we moved in. I'm hoping the bachelor used it for a study because it was that trendy red everyone is gaga over. Good for a study, not so good for a bedroom for four little girls. We painted it lavender. Let me tell you, covering up red is no easy task.
Our bedroom is somewhat neutral, browns and grays. Unfortunately, the paint job is so bad that I'm not sure we could ever cover it up if we wanted to. There's paint splattered on the ceiling, spots where you can see through to the white. I just really wish I could have been here to see who did the actual painting.
This all leads us to the master bathroom. To me, a bathroom is a sanctuary. A place to relax in a scalding hot bath and get away from the worries of the day. I won't go into the fact that this bathroom has a regular-sized tub. (Someday I WILL live in a house with a luxurious garden tub). But how the heck are you supposed to relax in a forest green bathroom? There's no light! It's not bright. It's dark and depressing.
Since Hubby is tired of listening to me complain about all the icky-colored rooms in our house, he has finally agreed to paint the bathroom. (It may have helped that I had one of the girls hand him a paint sample and say "This is what we should give Mommy for Mother's Day). In just a few weeks (we need to find the time to actually do this), I will have a nice neutral colored bathroom. A bright, cheery place to relax, on the rare occasion that I find time to relax in a hot bath. It's about time!

The kids' rooms were a very dirty blue color when we moved into this house, and given how long much paint it took to cover that up, I can't even imagine what red would require! Our house needed a lot of work when we moved in, but painting was one of the easiest ways to improve the way it looks and feels!

Someday I will have a master bedroom with a bathroom larger than three by four feet!

Kilz Primers and paints, found at Walmart. I will never use another paint. EVER.

And I just paint ceilings in color. We like color in our house.

We used Kilz to get rid of the red. It took 3 or 4 coats, but the end result was well worth it!

I feel your pain! Our house was painted horribly when we moved in - messily and in bad taste. The entire first floor had an ivy stencil border. Sponge painting. An aweful hand-painted mural. We've repainted everything except the one bedroom with dark green-light green-yellow stripes... and I think I've complained enough that we're finally going to do that.

We've had luck with Sherman Willams Harmony. They're a bit pricey but watch for sales/coupons/company discounts. Quality is great.

Good luck!

I hope you get the beautifully colored bathroom you want for Mother's Day! :)

Home improvement projects always get put off at our house. There were so many things we wanted to change/improve that we've lived with for the last 6 years, just because it was easier than taking on a project. However, we have made some nice improvements in the last few years and recently talked about listing priorities and then making sure we complete one or two tasks each year. We'll see how that goes...

I hope the painting project goes well. It will be so nice to enjoy a relaxing bath in your "new" bathroom. :o)

I used sherwin williams too 100.00 bucks to paint the girls room but hey all their dirty little hand prints and other little girl messes wipe off. You sooo need a garden tub for -- fathers day!! Surprise him with one ;-)

The color of a room really matters to me. The room I'm in most is a pale buttery yellow. The great room is a pale shade of chocolate milkshake (but it has some yellow in it). Right now I'm wondering how to repaint the main bathroom. I realize that it has to have a bit of yellow in it so I'll be happy.

Usually, I prefer colored walls to white walls, but if the color is cat puke . . . !
