The Surreal Life

Every now and then I have moments where I am hit with the realization that I am indeed a mother. It happens at the strangest times. The day after giving birth to my daughters I had to call to add them to our health insurance. It was a really strange thing to say "my daughters." The first time I heard myself called "Sue-Sue's mom" I didn't realize at first that I was the one they were referring to. This past January when we experienced what I now refer to as Barfbash '09 I was hit with the realization that I am the mommy and I have to pull myself out of bed in the middle of the night to do laundry and clean up vomit.
Last week I had another one of those moments. I had a concern about how something was being handled at school. After talking with the teacher (who gave me her full support but was at a loss for solutions) she suggested I call the principal. I don't know why, but it was a bizarre experience for me. Not only did I call the principal, but he listened to my concerns and came up with a remedy almost immediately. Then the next day during the school drop-off he came to talk with me and follow up on our phone conversation. The entire time he was talking to me all I could think was "Wow. I really am a parent! I'm talking to the principal and he's treating me like an adult."
All joking aside, yes, I do know on a daily basis that I am a mom. Still, every now and then I find myself in situations where it hits me like a ton of bricks... and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I remember that I'm a dad when I'm forced to stop playing w/ the Dora (Mega) Bloks...

Oh yeah, like you didn't FORCE the girls to play with the blocks yesterday so you had an excuse to build things.

I'm looking forward to "testing" out their new videogame system too...

I get it all the time. My daughter just turned fifteen. How the heck did that happen? Hell, I'm barely comfortable with the notion I'm a new mom (which I'm that, too).

Of course, the same thing happened with the realizations I had that I was an adult when my SISTER (two years younger) turned 21. If she was an adult, what did that make me?

And working at Johnson Space Center, with space stuff. I'd been working there six months, was driving around on site when I had to pull over as it hit me. I work on space stuff. And they pay me.

Heaven help me if I ever publish anything substantial. I'll be pinching myself for a year.

I'm so glad you put that in words, because I thought I was the only one. My husband said he never has quite that "wait, *I*'m the parent!" experience, although his self-perception is that he's a father of infants and is always shocked at how mature the kiddos are.

Stephanie: I love the fact that as a rocket scientist you're still blown away by the fact that you get paid to work on space stuff.

Sadia: trust me, you're not alone!

I definitely have days like this - it's as if part of me can't believe that I actually grew up... of course, one of the fun things about being a parent is that you DO have a fantastic excuse to play with toys!

Hubby definitely uses that as his "excuse" for playing with their toys.

I know exactly what you're talking about and I can totally relate to being called "Mo's Mommy" instead of by my own name. Or having to care for sick kids when you yourself are sick.

When my son was going through some serious health issues, I think it aged me (internally) about 10 years - as I found myself questioning his surgeon and challenging the pharmacist and being this really strong-willed, vocal advocate for my kid - talk about a mom moment.

When my daughters were in the NICU after their birth I had to speak with various physicians and I too found myself challenging them. At first I was intimidated and then I realized... "these are my kids!"
