Mom? Mooomm? MOMMMMMMMM!

Some days I think I need to change my name. I'm not sure what I would call myself... anything but mommy. I know... that's terrible, right? It's just that some times I think if I hear another person yell "Mom? Mommy?" I might just lose it.
Here's a typical experience in my house:
Everyone is entertained, playing with dolls or quietly reading a book or something and I take the opportunity to leave the room (bathroom break, fold laundry, figure out where the cats are... take your pick). Then this happens.
"Mom?"
"What?"
"Mom?
"What?"
"MOOOMMMYYYY!!!!"
"WHAT?!"
"Where are you?"
"Upstairs."
"Mom?"
"What do you need?"
"I love you." Or "You're my best friend."
Hmmmmm... on second thought I guess I'll just keep going by Mommy.

I hear you. Lucas is working hard on getting Melody not to interrupt. And then she pulls, "Mommy, you're the best." "Okay, what do you need?" "Nothing. I was just telling you you're the best."

This is why I go by Mama instead of Mommy. I actually remember screaming "Mommmmyyyyyyyyyyyy" as a child and knew I didn't want to be on the receiving end of that as an adult. Although, somehow, my kids still scream "Mommy" when they are feeling particularly dramatic.

Sadia: Yep, when I'm interrupted that's usually what happens, too.
Maryanne: Roo calls me Mama... so from her I hear "Mama? Mama? MOM!"
Through all of this, hearing I'm their best friend or that they love me usually makes me smile.

I think when they see the expression on my face they are smart enough to come up with a quick response to defuse the situation instantly! Smart move on their part!

It doesn't get better with age (except, when they're teenagers, it's not likely to be an "I love you," or "you're my best friend."

Sorry, you had to be told. Enjoy them while they still like you. :)

I love your blog. I stumbled upon it totally by accident. Your kids are so cute!!!! I am only 12, but I get your blog.

HT: hmmmm... maybe it's the look on my face that has them instantly telling me they're my best friend??
Stephanie: when they're teens they'll yell at me and then slam their doors!

My four-year-old just started calling me by my first name. I picked him up from preschool the other day and he says, "Hello Brooke." Now talk about wierd.

I've been telling him the same thing my dad used to tell me: There are only two people in this world who can call me Mom (Dad) and you're one of them. So please, call me Mom (Dad).

Seems like Mommy is a pretty great name after all :)

My daughters called me by my first name for about a week. Then they went back to Mommy.
